Overview Information
The purpose of the Iowa State Spirit Squad is to promote and uphold school spirit. As a member of the team you will have the opportunity to attend functions, which will enhance school spirit and give recognition to Iowa State University. It is your responsibility to put forth your best effort as a spirit squad member at all engagements, and maintain a sense of good sportsmanship, promote crowd involvement, uphold better relations between schools, and maintain and create a level of excellence to be continued through the years. Members will be challenged to increase personal growth and development through the personal management of athletic and academic responsibilities.

Tryout Information
Cheer tryouts for the 2009-2010 school year will be held April 25-26, 2009.
- The squad consists of an all-girl squad and a co-ed squad.
- Out-of-towners are in charge of their own hotel arrangements.
- Please do not send a video.
- You must be at tryouts to be considered for the squad.
- Please wear form-fitting clothing and CHEER shoes.
- I ask that girls keep their hair out of their eyes.
- You MUST bring proof of a current physical (within the year) and insurance info (Forms available on main Spirit Squad page.)
- Both squads cheer for football, volleyball and men and women’s basketball.
- We usually travel to away football games and occasionally basketball games and of course, postseason play.
- Freshmen who make the squad are allowed to cheer.
- We practice 3 times weekly for 2.5 hours each.
- Cheerleaders are expected to follow ALL rules and guidelines set by the coach.
- Cheer squad members are expected to engage in a rigorous strength conditioning program 3 times weekly, outside of practice.
- Partial
scholarships/stipends may be awarded to second, third and fourth year
members pending compliance to rules and regulations.
- There are no height or weight restrictions.
At the Tryout
- You will perform a fight song, toe-touch and a series of stunts
- Tumbling is not required to tryout, but no one has made the squad who did not tumble at tryouts.
- Stunts include anything from arabesques, scorpions, liberties and
heel stretches with various uptakes (ground ups, hands, walk in) and
dismounts (fulls or double downs).
- Tumbling ranges from standing backhandsprings to advanced tumbling passes.
- With both stunts and tumbling, the more difficult the skill, the more points awarded.
- When trying out for the all-girl squad, you may tryout as a flyer, side base or back spot.
